To be in proper scale it is going to need to be a pretty tight weave but tight weave fabrics also seem to tend toward a shiny 'silk like' finish which is not what I'm looking for.

No worries, I've got a foolproof (with the emphasis on fool) method for making the covers so I'll just keep acquiring swatches of red cloth until I find the perfect fit.
