#435829 Everything old is new again............
I have a number of cars that I am passionate about but the two that are always near or at the top of the list are both named ‘Daytona’
The Cobra Daytona Coupe and the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona are my favorite front engine, rear drive GT cars and I have the multiple models to prove it.
My latest acquisition was the ‘upgraded’ Ferrari by Kyosho. It was the reissue of the #64 car that raced at Daytona in 1977. Kyosho had done this car before but as the ‘restored’ version which was missing a few item – such as the rear ‘ducktail’ and a bunch of livery.
I’m one of those guys who likes to get the ‘best model possible’ of the cars he likes most so I bought the ‘as raced’ version. That left me with the original car. I suppose I could have sold it but the market for it likely would not be very strong. A better idea for me was to convert it into a car that Kyosho had not made a model of.
The best match I could find was the car that Hobbs and Posey drove for NART at Watkins Glen in 1972
I liked this car for a lot of reasons. First off I kind of liked the fact that the numeral font on the doors and tail was different from that on the hood. I liked the look of the car without the front fender ‘fins’ and with just the small chin spoiler. I also liked that the car ran with the lights ‘covered’ as it is a nice change of pace compared to most of my other GTB/4 models.
It was a pretty simple ‘conversion’ – remove the old livery and install new, remove the front fender fins, add a scoop on the driver’s side fender and a couple of hold down straps on the bonnet and mask off the headlight covers.
Sorry for the less than stellar photos
I bought this model in 2004, it was my first GTB/4. So my oldest Daytona becomes my newest - recycling FLM style
