#434291 Gurney Porsche 804 Formula 1
Posted by Bill Bennett on Friday Dec 19, 2014 at 02:28AM
The whole group of posts a few strings below got FLM and me talking off-board about what to do with our AUTOart Porsche 804's that we wanted to change from Bonnier cars to Gurney cars, specifically into the French Gran Prix winning Gurney car. Seems that over the season Porsche added radius arms to the front and then rear suspension to cars that started the season without them.

When AA made the models they made one car without either the front or rear pieces as they were raced at the beginning of the season (Bonnier's) and one car with both the front and the rear suspension pieces that never raced but that is now in the Porsche Museum.

I tried to convert the Bonnier season opener to the Gurney car as raced in the French GP and it just wasn't going well. Anything I tried to do would end-up looking cobbled and that wasn't satisfactory for such a beautiful little piece. So I put it under a rag to keep the dust off and went on to other things. The conversations below got my interest going again and when FLM figured out that the Gurney Dutch GP car, #12, didn't have any of the added suspension pieces that was the answer. Even though it didn't win, I'd rather have a correct DNF than a horribly cobbled winner.

Although AA kind of goofed-up the whole thought process and I wish they'd make a correct French GP car (I know they never will), I now have Gurney's season opener and the prettiest one of the bunch and I'm good with that. This really is a beautifully done and heavy little model.

I made the decals and here's what we have. Thanks, Frank.

BTW: If you're in the same situation as FLM and I were, the decal sets to make the conversion are available.
