The top of the wheel well arch is at the same height as the top of the front wheels on my Exoto 917/30, just a tinge higher than your modified version, but nowhere near as bad as the one on the first pic. I guess it's down to factory tolerance. Some of them are worse than the others. Maybe they had a change in spring suppliers and the later ones were longer/stiffer?
